I first painted this scene on location the middle of the busy wharf area in Monterey. This lovely garden is adjacent to the oldest theater in California, set in the historic district. While I painted this scene, the young gardener worked diligently at his job, raking the paths and trimming dead limbs and overgrown shrubs. With no one to know any different, he never once turned to a cell phone or took a break. He worked quietly and with pride in his job. I was so impressed that when I completed the painting, I spent a few minutes talking with him, and complimenting him on his exemplary work ethic. I named the painting after him. Thank you, Mario, for caring this old garden. I loved the scene so much I painted it a second time in the studio... and this is the scene you see here.
